As soon as you get out of your house hean to the north path anf Prof. Oak will come out. You will go to his lab and choose a Pokémon. You may choose Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle. I recommend Squirtle but if you're a beginner you might want to pick Bulbasaur. Head north through the route and you'll end up in Viridian City.
